TraveLore: Mt. Pico De Loro ~ Ang umaawit na kagandahan ni Inang Kalikasan :)


Madalas kong marinig ang bundok ng Pico De Loro bilang isa sa mga sikat akyatin sa Metro Manila. Kilala ito sa hugis niyang kahalintulad sa tuka ng isang Loro. Bukod dito’y kilalang pasyalan din ang lokasyon ng Pico o Mt. Palay-Palay. Nakapalibot dito ang mga high class na beach resort. Mayroon din namang pang-masa na languyan, subalit kapansin-pansin ang pagiging komersyalisado ng lugar. Sa pagbagtas sa daan papunta sa DENR, madadaanan ang Puerto Azul na kilalang resort sa Cavite. Maayos ang mga kalsada. Sementado. Halatang madalas puntahan para sa  pagpupulong ng mga negosyante, mahahalagang kaganapan, outing ng mga kumpanya, at pagbabakasyon ng mga turista. 

Nagkita-kita kami ng mga kasama ko sa choir na sina Jen at Julie sa aming tagpuang lugar sa Commonwealth. Sumakay ng bus papuntang Coastal. Naroon kasi ang terminal ng mga bus na bumibiyaheng Ternate, Cavite. Alas-siyete ng umaga ng maging lulan kami ng bus na pang-Sunday’s best ang tugtugan. Ang inaasahan naming tatlong oras na byahe, naging dalawa na lang. Alas-nuwebe impunto nang makarating kami ng Ternate. Ibinaba kami ni kuyang konduktor sa sakayan ng tricycle na maghahatid sa amin sa DENR. Ayon sa mga blog na nabasa ko, PHP250 ang bayad, pero walastik nagtaas na pala ang singil sa PHP300. Tatlong tao lang ang pinapayagang sumakay sa isang tricycle, kung nasa anim o higit pa ang bilang ninyo, mahigit dalawang tricycle ang kukunin niyo. Sakto tatlo lang kami, wala ng problema. Alam nating halos wala ng ipinagkaiba ang Cavite sa Maynila; pero sa bandang bahaging iyon ng Ternate, presko at masarap pa langhapin ang hangin. Hindi naman masasabing walang pag-unlad ang lalawigan sapagkat sementado ang mga kalsada at napapaligiran na ito ng mga komersyalisadong pasyalan.

Lumulan na kami ng tricycle at binagtas ang mahaba at matarik na kalsada. Naiintindihan na namin kung bakit tatlo lamang ang pinapayagan sumakay sa bawat tric. Kung ayaw ninyong tumimbwang sa daan, huwag na kayo makipagtalo sa driver. Paahon ang daraanan kaya kapag sinabing tatlo lang ang pwede, tatlo lang talaga ang pwede. Narating namin ang DENR makaraan ang 30 minuto. Kailangan magparehistro doon sa halagang php25. Mayroon silang inaalok na guide sa tumataginting na php1,200! Walastik! Pasensiya na subalit kitang-kita ko ang pagka-oportunista ng mga taong namamahala dito. Una, hindi ganoon kahirap akyatin ang Mt. Pico De Loro. Katunayan niyan, maari itong akyatin ng walang kasamang guide. Pangalawa, kung mag-aalok man sila ng guide bakit naman sa ganoon kamahal na presyo. Hiyang-hiya naman ang presyo ng guide sa mga mas mahihirap na bundok, na kadalasa’y PHP500 na ang pinakamahal na singil. Wala naman kaming balak kumuha ng guide dahil ayon na rin sa mga nabasa kong blog, madali lang sundan ang trail. Pinahahalagahan ko ang pagsisikap ng pamunuan nito na isaayos ang mga daraanan. Napansin ko kasi na nilalagyan nila ng harang na sanga ang ibang mga direksyong maaring makalito sa hikers. Sa ganoong paraan isang direksyon ng trail na lamang ang mayroon at hindi na kailangang mag-eeny, meeny, miny, moe ng mga umaakyat. Doon lamang ako nadismaya sa pagpresyo nila ng kanilang guide. Kumikitang-kabuhayan lang ang peg.

Walang bilihan ng heavy breakfast sa registration site liban sa mga nilagang itlog, saging, at mga katulad ng fish crackers at ibang kahalintulad. Siguraduhing nakapag-almusal ng maayos bago tumungo sa DENR site. Inaasahan kasi namin na may makakainan kaming karinderya pero isang malaking epic fail dahil wala. Mabuti na lamang may baon kaming donuts. J

Sinimulan na namin ang pag-akyat habang nilalasap ang sarap ng saging latundan. Madali lang talagang sundan ang trail. Walang kahirap-hirap. Hindi nakalilito. Medyo maputik at madulas ang daraanan likha marahil ng mga nakaraang pag-ulan. Hindi mahalumimig ang lugar. Sa katunayan malamig ang singaw sa loob ng kagubatan. Sa daraanan paakyat asahan na ang mga bahagyang paahon at pagkatapos ay pababang pagsulong. Hindi naman gaanong mahirap. Mag-ingat lang dahil medyo madulas ang daraanan. Hindi mabato ang trail. Madalas ay puro lupa ang tatapakan. Maganda ito kapag tag-araw. Masakit kasi sa paa kapag mabato ang bagtasin. Subalit asahang magiging mahirap ito kung maulan ang panahon dahil magiging maputik masyado ang daan. Kung may mga bato kasi, makakatulong ito kahit papaano na pigilan ang tuluyang pagkakadulas.





Kapansin-pansin ang mga malalaking punong nakatumba sa ilang bahagi ng trail. Nakaharang ang malalaking katawan nito sa daraanan. Kinakailangan pang sumampa sa matataba at makakapal ng katawan at sanga nito para makatawid sa kabila. Karamihan sa mga nagtumbahang puno ay iyong mga ginagamit sa paggawa ng muwebles. Hindi ako maalam sa puno pero hindi na kailangan ng expertise para malamang maganda ang klase ng punong iyon. Mukhang matagal na naman ang pagkakatumba nila dahil ang ilan ay tinubuan na ng lumot at mga kabute. Marahil ay likha iyon ng malalakas na bagyong nagdaan noon sa Cavite. Naisip ko tuloy, paano kung bigla kaming abutan na isang malakas na bagyo sa gitna ng kagubatan. Delikado.

Nangingibabaw ang naghalong amoy ng dahon, sanga, at lupa. Amoy bundok. Ang sarap langhapin. Nararamdaman na namin ang malayang pag-agos ng pawis sa aming likuran, noo, at iba pang bahagi ng katawan. Masarap pagpawisan sa ganoong gawain. Tumatama ang sinag ng araw sa aming balat; liwanag na lumulusot sa mga siwang ng mayayabong na palyo ng dahon.  Humihinto kami sa mga pagkakataong labis na ang pagkahingal; umiinom ng tubig at kumakain ng chocolate. Sa tantiya namin ay ala-una kami makararating sa tuktok pero alas-onse pa lang ay nasa campsite na kami. Mula dito ay 30 minuto na lang ang gugugulin paakyat. Nakakapanibago lang ang sandaling oras ng pag-akyat kung ikukumpara sa ibang bundok na halos sukuan ko na sa kalagitnaan. 




Mula sa bahaging iyon ay matatanaw mo ang kagandahan ng Mt. Pico De Loro. Kitang-kita ang tayog at kariktan nito. Isang hari ng kanyang palasyo, buong pagmamalaking nakatanaw sa kanyang nasasakupan katabi ang kanyang reyna.

Bago kami nagpasyang umakyat ay sinulit muna ang pagkuha ng larawan. Click! Click! Click! Maraming hikers ang nagpapahinga pero walang nagka-camping. Ipinagbawal na ang pag-overnight sa lugar kaya puro dayhike lang ang pwedeng magawa sa Mt. Pico. Mula sa aming kinatatayuan ay tanaw ang salubong na hangganan ng Cavite at Batangas. Nakalulula pero nakamamangha rin. Mas nangingibabaw ang pagkahalina. Muli ay napaalalahanan ako na tayo’y ga-atom na tuldok lang sa napakalawak na sansinukob. 

Nakilala namin doon si Reynaldo. Nag-offer siya sa amin na mag-guide paakyat sa summit. Kakailanganin daw kasi namin ng tulong sa pag-akyat sa monolith (ito ang matayog na bloke ng bato katabi ng Mt. Pico.) Kahit magkano lang daw ang iabot namin kay Reynaldo. Dahil sa kagustuhan kong maakyat ang monolith, hinikayat ko ang dalawang kasama ko na kunin siya. Ayos din, mayroon na kaming instant photographer.




Sinimulan na namin ang paglalakad patungo sa rurok ng Mt. Pico. Matarik subalit ikaw nga, “Yakang-yaka!”. Ang aming ilang minutong pag-akyat bago ang final destination (parang hindi maganda pakinggan) ay naging mapanghamon. Matarik. Walang makapitan. Ang bahaging ito ng anggulong 45 antas na paahon ang sadyang nakapagpalula sa dalawa kong kasama. Hindi ko sila masisisi. Ganoon rin ang naramdaman ko noong una akong mag-hike sa kabundukan naman ng Mt. Batulao. Nakakapanginig sapagkat wala kang ibang makapitan maliban sa mga batong naroroon. 

Kaya dapat payuko ang akyat. Huwag tumindig ng diretso. Ikurba paharap ang katawan at pagtuunan ng pansin ang balanse.

Sa wakas ay narating din ang tuktok at isang makapigil-hiningang tanawin ang bumati sa amin. Dahil nga sikat na akyatin ang Mt. Pico, punung-puno ng tao ang makipot na espasyo sa tuktok ng bundok. Overcrowded. Nagpahinga muna kami at kinain ang baon naming donuts. Pagod na ang mga kasama ko. Nanginginig na ang mga binti. Inaalala rin nila ang pagbaba. Naiintindihan ko sila. Hindi talaga biro ang mamundok. 






Kuha ng larawan dito. Selfie roon. Ang saya mag-picture kahit na ba ramdam ang pagsisiksikan ng mga tao sa tuktok. Walangya. Siksikan na nga sa siyudad, siksikan pa rin sa kabundukan? Mula sa tuktok ay pinagmasdan namin ang yamang lupa at yamang tubig na mayroon ang Pilipinas. Ang gandang tanawin ng asul at berdeng obra maestra ng kalikasan.

Napansin naming ang haba ng pila sa ibaba ng monolith. Wala nang balak umakyat doon ang mga kasama ko. Nawalan na rin ako ng gana umakyat kung hindi ko sila kasama. Mukhang aabutin din kasi ng siyam-siyam kung makikihanay pa ako sa mahabang pila. Sayang. Pero okay lang pwede namang bumalik anytime; sana masakto ko sa panahong hindi dagsa ang hikers.






Tinahak namin ang Nasugbu-Batangas trail pababa. Mas madali daw ito sabi ni Reynaldo. Parang hindi naman. Pero yakang-yaka naman. Parang mas mahaba lang ang oras na ginugol namin. Mas matagal. Dahil dinala na namin si Reynaldo hanggang pagbaba, naging php500 sarado na ang bayad sa kanya. Kanina kasi sa monolith lang ang usapan. Ayos na rin kumpara naman sa PHP1200 ng DENR guide. Sa baba ay mayroong terminal ng tricycle papuntang Nasugbu bus terminal. PHP500 ang bayad sa tric at halos 45 minuto din ang byahe. Malayo talaga. Pagkarating sa terminal kumain lang kami sa Jollibee, chika-chika, palit damit, at saka sakay sa bus patungong Pasay. Inabot ng tatlong oras ang byahe namin. Alas-nuwebe ng makarating kami ng Pasay, sumakay ng bus pa-Fairview at ayun, nakauwi ng kanya-kanyang bahay mga bandang alas-diyes y media. J Kapoy gyud pero ang sayang karanasan na makaakyat ulit ng bundok!

Random Thoughts: How deeply a yell can wound

I used to yell at people. I do it intentionally ; because through yelling I got to exercise my power. Mind you that I wasn't yet a CEO or even a person with higher position. But I yelled. Just like what my former bosses were doing. I yelled at my subordinates. When I was asked to lead I would start yelling to the people at the most stressful time e.g. event, shoot, midst of unexpected problems. I let them felt that I was more stressful and pressured than any of them; that I got the right to yell; thaf if they were on my shoes they would yell as well and I would totally understand that. I idolized my bosses so much because they were successful in their chosen career. They went through so much hardship before they got there. Now I have to work hard as they do. I made them my inspiration that I even  went after their attitude of yelling at people.

Funny. I had several superiors before from company head, theater director, dance guru, to foreigner boss. More than half of them are the yelling ones. The sort of what you called the 'terrorist boss'. You tell me about it, I was the luckiest of the luckiest subordinates on earth. Sometimes I felt like asking what I have done so much, to deserve such a sweet reward. But hey, despite their monstrous appearancr errr I mean attitude when they were under stress and time pressure (which they often were), there were still good things about them. As I said, I admired and respected these people. Except when they yelled at people. Well, I only realized it now that I'm older and more mature.

I remember way back in college whenever I led a production performance, I used to stress myself too much that I got to yell at my classmates at times. My point then was: you chose me as a leader do your duty as responsible followers. The truth was I was just ill-patient. I never worried that my classmates would get mad. They wouldn't take it personally. They knew it was just work for the class. Years went by and we left the university. One day I came across my classmate. She's already a ramp model and had her cool photos invading the net. I congratulated her and suddenly she blurted out, "Di ko nga akalain. Dati sinisigaw-sigawan mo lang ako." And my jaw dropped upon hearing that. It didn't came into me that she and perhaps our other classmates were feeling that way towards me. They had this discreet resentment; they've hated me and perhaps until now. What a worse way to be remembered. :(

Yelling people are not aliens at many companies; not even at some homes. Though no harsh or hurting words are said, a yelling in anger, frustration and the like, will always hurt the person's feelings. Either it's their ego or their feelings that you've hit, what really matter is you hurt them. And they remember you that way, as piece of an a*sehole that's so full of himself. This I realized along my journey in life, yelling creates a void in our heart. That void is filled with emotion over the period of time. The louder and the harsher the yell, the larger is the void. Whether it's the emotion of hatred, resentment, sorrow, or frustration, it is the emotion that they feel about you -- and often, it is the hatred. We can talk to them, laugh with them, and treat them as our friend (or family), but that void will always stay where it is. It's often hard to fill in the void created by yelling. Something grows from that void as well, and we wouldn't want to know more about it....

Feature: St. Peter Parish Shrine Choir in Infanta-- Summer Outing & Team Building Activity

An organization should conduct an outside activity at least once or twice a year to give its people a break.  This is one good way to de-stress and to recharge the members (or employees) physically, mentally, and emotionally; and at the same time relieve them from the grinds of daily events. The leaders should consider this kind of activity in able to refresh the people and re-orient them about their purpose and goal within the organization.




Our church choir, the St. Peter Parish Shrine Choir has just had a Team Building Activity last May 16-17 at Infanta, Quezon. It supposed to be the usual summer outing for the group. But we (the Team assigned for the Outing) thought that it would be better if we’d have something more than just the swimming and fun; something that would benefit the group; something that would strengthen the bond; and would make the members re-assess their purpose and responsibility to the group. It was the first time that the choir made an excursion in a place as far as Infanta. For the past years it was usually held in a private pool resort within the Quezon City. The members couldn’t help but be excited when the officers approved the outing. The budget was the main part of the struggle but thank you to our generous alumni and member-sponsors who made it all possible. The members were just asked to prepare php 350 for the van and php 180 for the cottage rental. The rest was answered by the big-hearted people who believed in the beautiful objectives of the activity.

We gathered in St. Peter Parish at 8PM of May 15 and set for Infanta at around 8:30PM. The second batch travelled at 1AM since most of them had a night shift work up to 12MN. We (1st batch) arrived to JRL Beach Resort at 1AM. We just took few hours of sleep and got up to prepare the breakfast for the people. There were 36 attendees in all and they were divided into 3 teams.

In conducting a team building activity, you can either hire someone to facilitate or give the task to someone in the group who is capable. In our group, since we were the team assigned and it was our idea after all, we took the responsibility of organizing and facilitating the team building. We were four in the team –seven actually, but the three weren’t able to come – nonetheless, thank goodness we still managed it.  We met week before the activity and designed a one-day team building that aimed to promote fun, instil learning, and motivate the members to re-evaluate their performance, values, and perspective to the organization. It wasn’t really hard to facilitate a Team Building event; you can use various activities in which you can incorporate your set objectives. I’d be happy to share with you some of our activities that you can apply to your own team building. It will save you a lot of money rather than hiring someone to facilitate the activity to your group; also, it’d better if the facilitators know the group so they can directly address the concerning group issues:

WARM UP / UNISON EXERCISE:



Before the real activity we made sure that they are physically warmed up. We made them do the unison exercise where they formed their selves into a diamond shape. The four corners were asked to lead the choreography through the tune of Papi by Jennifer Lopez.








ACTIVITIES

TITLE: KNOW ME MORE

The group form a circle and sit altogether in the sand. The facilitator gives the people 5 minutes to look for a single thing that best represents them. In a fast pace round, each will explain their object and on how it represents them. At the end of sharing, the facilitator gives the group another 5-8 minutes to combine those things and form a single structure or object that best represents the organization.

Objective: To help the members re-assess and know themselves better; to make them realize that they are all a significant part of the organization.

TITLE: THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

The group stays in the circle formation. Each has a yellow paper and a pen with him/her. Divide the paper into two columns. Write “First Impression” on the top of the first column and “Short Message” on the second column. Write your name to the left top corner of the paper. On cue of the facilitator, pass the paper to the next person to the right. Give 1-2 minute for the people to write his/her 1st impression and short message to the person who owns the paper. Pass it again to the right and so on until your own paper get back to you.

Objective: To make the people realize how the people see them as individual and as co-member; to point out the positive and negative traits as they are assessed by their co-members.

TITLE: CHEERING COMPETITION


The members go to their respective teams. In 10 minutes they need to prepare a cheering/yell and perform it in front of everybody. The facilitators judge the best cheering performance among the three teams. Corresponding points will be given.

Objective: To develop unity and motivate the members contribute ideas under time pressure; to encourage the people enjoy the activity and have great fun.





TITLE: TUG OF WAR


Prepare a long rope. Assign the first two teams that will play. Draw a line in between to mark the territory of each team. On the cue of facilitator each team will join forces to tug the rope to their direction. The losing team will then have to play with the remaining team. Afterwards, the two winning team face each other for the final ‘Tug of War’.

Objective: To develop coordination among the members and motivate them to work towards a unified goal. ‘Tug of War’ is a physical game; it instils to the members that they have to be physically fit so they can function properly at whatever task or activity they are assigned, in and outside the organization.

TITLE: NO TOUCHING THE GROUND RACE

The facilitator sets a distant from the shore to the chest-deep part of the water. Each team will have to line up in the shore. One member is sent to the water. One by one, the member needs to travel the distance WITHOUT his/her feet touching the ground. The members can carry him/her all throughout the round trip. More than one team mate can go with the travelling member. The travelling member should neither swim the water nor lay feet on the sand. This will be done until all the members have travelled around. When a member’s feet accidently touch the sand he/her should start again from the beginning.



Objective: To develop good strategy; camaraderie; and to understand that in a team there are times that one would have to support and assist the others.

TITLE: SNAKE GAME IN THE WATER

The two teams position themselves in the knee-deep part of the water. They will line up, with each member holding to the waist of the person in front of him/her. The person at the back end of the line should have a handkerchief tied to his/her sleeve (you can put it in any part you’d like). The goal is for each team leader (the person in front) to snatch the handkerchief of the other team. Line should remain connected all throughout. Once the team members get separated or the line is broken, the other team is proclaimed winner.





Objective: To develop strong unity; to teach them the concept of holding on to one another.

TITLE: FILL ME UP

Each team has a 1.5 L size plastic bottle. It is placed in the sand out in the reach of water. Each team lines up in the shore where their plastic bottle is located. A team representative walks to the chest deep part of the water. Each member has to race their way to that distant and then back to the shore. They would have to squeeze the water from their clothes to the team’s bottle. A hole is punched at every inch line of the bottle’s height. The goal is to finish the race in the fastest time and to fill up the bottle as many water as possible.





Objective: To motivate the member set an objective for the team; and to develop good strategy in achieving their set goals.

TITLE: BUILD ME A TOWER


Facilitators prepare materials and distribute them to teams in equal numbers. In 15 minutes each team needs to build a tower that is high, strong, and beautiful. Every 3 minutes, the team needs to surrender two members to the cage set by the facilitators. At the end of set time, the facilitators will judge which is the highest, the strongest, and the most beautiful.

Objectives: To develop strategy; encourage team works and leadership; to motivate them to set their main goals and develop ways to achieve success in what they are doing.



BONFIRE & AWARDING!

It was a whole day filled with so much fun. Most of them ended with bruised arms and sore muscles but the pains were easily washed away by the thoughts that they were spending the good times with their second family: the choir ministry. We took a break at 5PM to give time for the dinner preparation. By 8PM we made a bonfire and announced the winners. To reward the people for their cooperation in the activity, we prepared special awards and prizes for them such as: The Wagi Team, Most Organized Team, Most Energetic Team, Leadership Awards, Best in Recitation (those who were active in the assessment), Body Shot Award, Body Builder Award, Best in Swimwear, and the PG Award (gluttony award :P).















We had an open forum around the bonfire. The activity is meant to address the issue of misunderstanding, tampuhan, and the hindrances that keep us from serving actively in the choir. Afterwards, our choirmaster Kuya Eds, led the closing prayer and we all give thanks to the Lord who brought us all together and kept us safe throughout the activity.



The next day, we spent most of the time taking picture and swimming in the azure water. Before we left, Nanay, the owner of the resort requested a song number for us. We happily performed to her one of the songs we are singing in the mass “The Lord Bless You”.  She was moved and teary-eyed after; and we were glad to touch her heart in that way.

Unforgettable weekend it was! We arrived at QC at around 5PM, went to each own home and rested. Another bunch of good memories were then added to our treasure box. Now everybody's looking forward to the next summer! :)

Random Thoughts:Just when you get sick of rules

I've been catching up lately with the U.S. series "House of Cards" (still in the Season 1 but almost done) and so far it's not failing to struck me; at how evil and dirty the politics is and how a real gamer should play well with balls and numbers. The detailed portrayal of the scheme keeps racking my brain. The effect on me goes as far as doubting the credibility of the fifth state in the worst way that you can imagine. This is the sort of arena that got no room for honesty and clean conscience. But let's leave the full review to my post soon in Now Brewing. However, don't get me wrong on my statement on media. It's as vicious as the others -- a savage that drool over fresh and exclusive scoop, men and women who slut their way around potential and influential source, ready to manipulate a story if necessary -- these and far worst bargains for their own benefits. But what else can they do? Survival of the fittest is the main rule here.

I'd like to give a special attention to the fictional company in the show, the Slugline. It's an online media company that seemed to be revolutionary in its format and protocol. First, the office got no cubicles. There are chairs and tables and couches at every corner. Most likely the wire cables are hanging in the wall so one can just plug the net to her laptop. When you enter the premise, you'll see the staff all busy with their own gadgets -- laptop, mobile phone, tablet, etc. -- some are squatting in the floor while others are lying cozly in the sofa with earphones on their ears, not giving a care to the other people around them. Well, that's very anti-social but they're there to work after all. They post, blog, and write news  or anything they think of online.
